Hi Ricardo, we just got back from NRW Deathfest, an outstanding indoor festival in Germany: we had a blast! We had an amazing crowd and a great guest: Damian Leski (Broken Hope, Gorgasm) joined us on stage to sing “Suicide for Satan”, totally cool! This was our second time at NRWDF after 12 years, unbelievable we are still doing the same shit ahah!

1 Tell us a little about the new work "RITUAL THEOPHAGY"

​

Well, I wouldn’t define RT as a new work, since I composed it back in 2012-2013 and recorded in 2014. I had all the songs in my laptop but the band was on hold: at that time I was looking for a drummer but couldn’t find one good enough. In 2016 I started working with Darren Cesca and during the same year all the other instruments were recorded and album finally released.

RT marks an important passage within the artistical evolution of the band. Though Blasphemer trademark is clearly recognizable, some important new elements are taking shape in our music. The album is full with technical and chaotic riffs but song structures are more catchy and the atmospheric element is becoming relevant while  the 90’s classical death metal influences are definetly prominent.

2 What does the cover art of “RITUAL THEOPHAGY?

​

The artwork depicts Baphomet sitting on the world as its king, while holding an host with wich is obscuring the sun.

 

3 RITUAL THEOPHAGES How was the way of composing the themes in this work? and how was the process of recording the drums with Darren Cesca? and what is the story?

 

 

The whole composition process has been an hard task. Actually I wrote all the songs before getting in touch with Darren, using a drum machine. When Darren joined RT he didn’t even want to listen to the drums I wrote and start composing the drumparts from the very beginning. The result was astonishing! Darren is such a talented musician, for sure one the best I ever worked with. When drums were finished we had to re-arrange vocals and this took a while but even if the whole thing was pretty hard, I am very satisfied with the general result.

 

4 How was the process of recording and mazterization of DANIELE MEREGALLI in the DRAV studies?

​

Daniele is a cool guy to work with. We were 100% relaxed while recording RT. The mixing process was pretty long because we wanted a natural sound, avoiding all the over-produces cliches of the genre. Maybe was too much, cause I have to admit that it is a little bit row...exactly what we wanted at that time. That’s why I am still very satisfied listening to it.

 

5 What is the meaning that holds the álbum title "RITUAL THEOPHAGY"?

Ritual theophagy is nothing but an ironic periphrasis of Eucharist, the rite performed by catholics that consists in eating the host believing it turns into the flesh of Jesus Christ. Theophagy depicts the ritual act of eating god.

 

6 Tell us a bit about the 2005 demo of the band

 

This is probably the most violent and row material we ever recorded. It’s dark and heavy, the voice comes from the beyond and guitars are fucking sick, I love its disgusting, brutal sound!  Moreover thanks to this recording we signed with Comatose back in the days, so it is an important chapter in our history. In 2006 this demo was released as a split CD by Frost Foundation, but the label decided to mix everything once again.I have always considered the original version way better than the re-mix, so I got in touch with Unholy Domain Records that released this gem in its original form.

7 How things were with the distribution of the press with the previous álbum “ON THE INEXISTENCE OF GOD” y “DEVORING DECEPTION”

 

I can’t complain about distribution, Comatose Music did an otstanding job. Both the releases went very good and they are still selling after 10 years! Actually they have both been re-pressed several times.

 

8 Tell us about the new topic "JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS", have you received the acceptance you expect?

 

This single exists in digital format only and although downloaded from many fans it does not have the exposure you could reach with a physical format on the market. Moreover it’s just one song, only enough to get some attention. Thing is: we just wanted to present the new line up and be honest with our fans since we changed direction. We are no longer a tech brutal death band. We are still Blasphemer but our Formula changed into a more traditional death metal proposal.

To be honest I consider this single the very best Blasphemer song released so far because it reflects what I am as a musician and as a death metal fan. I reached equilibrium in songwriting and I was finally able to express something really personal within my musical composition.

 

9 What are the BLASPHEMER concerts like? Any special trips? and how is the scene of Milan and ITALIA?

 

Blasphemer live shows are something you shouldn’t miss! You can check our last gigs in youtube and see how we are bringing darkness over the venues we are hitting with this new fantastic line up! On stage we do our thing the best we can, bringing our anti-christian campaign all over europe! Soon we will have new backdrops and banners cause we’d like to create a special set for the upcoming gigs...

 

10 How are things going and the distribution with COMATOSE MUSIC?

 

 Comatose Music is a great label. I am playing death metal since more than 20 years and I saw many trends, labels, zines and fans vanishing. On the contrary, Comatose is still here and I consider it a true institution in the death metal underground.

 

11 Are you planning to record new material? Could you give us something?

 

We just finished our 3dt lenght, THE SIXTH HOUR and we are going to enter soon the studios and record this new chapter, that I consider the most solid in the whole Blasphemer history. I love this album and I gave all myself into the composition. If you are into anti-christian death metal, you will love this new release as I do: it’s going to be the ultimate Blasphemer Manifesto.

1 Cuéntanos un poco sobre el nuevo trabajo “RITUAL THEOPHAGES” .

 

Bueno, no definiría RT como un nuevo trabajo, ya que lo compuse en 2012-2013 y grabé en 2014. Tenía todas las canciones en mi computadora portátil pero la banda estaba en espera: en ese momento estaba buscando un baterista pero no pudo encontrar uno lo suficientemente bueno. En 2016 comencé a trabajar con Darren Cesca y durante el mismo año se grabaron todos los otros instrumentos y finalmente se lanzó el álbum.

RT marca un pasaje importante dentro de la evolución artística de la banda. Aunque la marca Blasphemer es claramente reconocible, algunos elementos nuevos importantes están tomando forma en nuestra música. El álbum está lleno de riffs técnicos y caóticos, pero las estructuras de las canciones son más pegajosas y el elemento atmosférico se está volviendo relevante, mientras que las influencias clásicas del death metal de los 90 son definitivamente prominentes.

 

  

2 ¿Qué hace la portada de RITUAL THEOPHAGES ?

 

La obra de arte representa a Baphomet sentado en el mundo como su rey, mientras sostiene un anfitrión con el cual está ocultando el sol.

 

3 RITUAL THEOPHAGES  ¿Cómo fue la forma de componer los temas en este trabajo? ¿Y cómo fue el proceso de grabación de la batería con Darren Cesca? y cuál es la historia

 

Todo el proceso de composición ha sido una tarea difícil. En realidad escribí todas las canciones antes de ponerme en contacto con Darren, usando una caja de ritmos. Cuando Darren se unió a RT, ni siquiera quería escuchar la batería que escribí y comenzar a componer las partes de batería desde el principio. El resultado fue asombroso! Darren es un músico tan talentoso, seguro que es el mejor con el que he trabajado. Cuando se terminaron los tambores, tuvimos que reorganizar las voces y esto tomó un tiempo, pero incluso si todo fue bastante difícil, estoy muy satisfecho con el resultado general.

 

4 ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y mazterización de DANIELE MEREGALLI en los estudios DRAV?

 

Daniele es un chico genial para trabajar. Estuvimos 100% relajados mientras grababamos RT. El proceso de mezcla fue bastante largo porque queríamos un sonido natural, evitando todos los clichés de sobreproducción del género. Tal vez fue demasiado, porque debo admitir que es una pequeña pelea ... exactamente lo que queríamos en ese momento. Es por eso que todavía estoy muy satisfecho de escucharlo.

 

 

5 ¿Cuál es el significado que tiene el título del álbum "RITUAL THEOPHAGY"?

 

La teofagia ritual no es otra cosa que una irrisas perifrasis de la Eucaristía, el rito realizado por los católicos que consiste en comer al anfitrión creyendo que se convierte en la carne de Jesucristo. La teofagia representa el acto ritual de comer dios.

 

6 Cuéntanos un poco sobre la demo 2005 de la banda.

 

Este es probablemente el material más violento y en fila que jamás hayamos grabado. Es oscuro y pesado, la voz viene del más allá y las guitarras están jodidamente enfermas, me encanta su sonido repugnante y brutal. Además, gracias a esta grabación firmamos con Comatose en los días, por lo que es un capítulo importante en nuestra historia. En 2006, esta demo fue lanzada como un CD dividido por la Fundación Frost, pero la etiqueta decidió mezclar todo una vez más. Siempre he considerado la versión original mucho mejor que la remezcla, así que me puse en contacto con Unholy Domain Records que se lanzó. Esta gema en su forma original.

 

7 Cómo fueron las cosas con la distribución de la prensa con el álbum anterior “ON THE INEXISTENCE OF GOD” y “DEVORING DECEPTION”

 

No me puedo quejar de la distribución, Comatose Music hizo un excelente trabajo. ¡Ambos lanzamientos fueron muy buenos y todavía se venden después de 10 años! En realidad ambos han sido re-presionados varias veces.

 

8 Cuéntanos sobre el nuevo tema "JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS" ¿has recibido la aceptación que esperas?

 

Este single existe solo en formato digital y, aunque descargado de muchos fanáticos, no tiene la exposición que podría alcanzar con un formato físico en el mercado. Además, es solo una canción, solo lo suficiente como para llamar la atención. La cosa es: solo queríamos presentar la nueva línea y ser honestos con nuestros fanáticos desde que cambiamos de dirección. Ya no somos una banda de muerte brutal tecnológica. Todavía somos Blasfemos, pero nuestra Fórmula se convirtió en una propuesta de death metal más tradicional.

Para ser honesto, considero que este single es la mejor canción de Blasphemer lanzada hasta ahora porque refleja lo que soy como músico y como fanático del death metal. Alcanzé el equilibrio en la composición y finalmente pude expresar algo realmente personal dentro de mi composición musical.

 

9 ¿Cómo son los conciertos de BLASPHEMER? ¿Algún viaje especial? ¿Y cómo es la escena de Milán y Italia?

 

¡Los shows en vivo de Blasphemer son algo que no debes perderte! ¡Puedes ver nuestros últimos conciertos en youtube y ver cómo traemos oscuridad sobre los lugares en los que estamos tocando con esta nueva y fantástica alineación! ¡En el escenario hacemos lo mejor que podemos, trayendo nuestra campaña anticristiana por toda Europa! Pronto tendremos nuevos fondos y pancartas porque nos gustaría crear un conjunto especial para los próximos conciertos ...

 

10 ¿Cómo van las cosas y la distribución con COMATOSE MUSIC?

 

Comatose Music es un gran sello. Estoy tocando el death metal desde hace más de 20 años y vi desaparecer muchas tendencias, sellos, revistas y fanáticos. Por el contrario, Comatosa todavía está aquí y la considero una verdadera institución en el death metal underground.

 

11 ¿Estás planeando grabar nuevo material? ¿Podrías darnos algo?

 

Acabamos de terminar nuestra duración en 3dt lenght, THE SIXTH HOUR y pronto entraremos en los estudios y grabaremos este nuevo capítulo, que considero el más sólido de toda la historia de Blasphemer. Me encanta este álbum y me entregué todo a la composición. Si te gusta el death metal anti-cristiano, te encantará este nuevo lanzamiento como lo hago yo: será el último Manifiesto de Blasphemer
