Hello BRODEQUIN, I'm Ricardo Bedoya, director of the web magazine SCUMZINE MAG, how are things in the band? And what is the expectation of coming to Colombia?

 

Hello Richard! Things are going pretty well although a little slow due to the distance between all the members. It presents some real challenges to writing and makes it impossible to have any kind of proper rehearsal. At this point it requires a lot of discipline from the individual members in regards to practicing regularly and maintaining your skill level. For example when we are preparing for a show I create a set list then use an iPod or iPad and run it through my amplifier setup to practice with the “band” haha.

 

I have heard a lot of great things about Colombia from some of my friends that have travelled there. From what I have been told I expect to come across many passionate fans of brutal death metal, see some amazing scenery and beautiful people. I have been practicing my Spanish, but don’t expect much haha.

 

1 - It's been 13 years since the last album "METHODS OF EXECUTION", what can we expect from the band's material again? (new themes, producer and recording studio)

 

The theme will remain the same, dealing with medieval torture and execution. The artwork I have been putting together is more in the style of “Festival of Death” As far as the recording studio in concerned we do not have anywhere specific that we are looking at.

We still have plenty of time to decide on a recording studio during the writing process.

 

 2 - What has changed the sound in BRODEQUIN?

 

I think anytime you have new members the sound will change due to the way they play their instruments. Joaquin uses a different guitar setup than Mike does so there is a difference that is unavoidable. Mike is still very much a member of the band and we have been writing new music together. Jan has some different approaches to things than Jon did so there will be some things that are a little different than before. Overall the sound will be similar to what we have created in the past, but small differences are unavoidable.

 

  

3 – what are diferent between the first álbum, “INSTRUMENTS OF TORTURE”, “FESTIVAL OF DEATH” and  “METHODS OF EXECUTION” related to music and lyrics?

 

The lyrical themes and imagery are all very related and touch on our usual sources of inspiration which is torture and execution techniques from history, medieval judicial proceedings and rulings etc. With “instruments of Torture” we were really digging into the subject matter, and for me there is nothing more brutal than the subject matter of Brodequin. Thats why I have continued to write about it for each album, the next album will have at least 10 songs based on the same type of brutality from the past.

Musically we tried to push our boundaries on each album in regards to speed and complexity. We still do that, I don’t see much of a point in playing in this genre if you aren’t challenging yourself. Honestly there are some new riffs that Mike and I have created that I can barely play at this point haha. But thats what I mean, I want to push myself and make myself better with each release.

 

4 - Is there a particular known musician that you would like to use in one of your next albums?

 

Thats a very difficult question to answer!! haha. I have so many friends in the scene that I would like to work with it would be impossible to pick just one! I’m always open and interested to work with Matti Way( Abominable Putridity), Ricky Myers( Suffocation ), Dan Louise ( Cinerary ), Lille Gruber ( Defeated Sanity ), Damian Leski ( Gorgasm/Broken Hope), Dave Hunt ( Anaal Nathrakh ), Angel Ochoa ( Cephalotripsy ), Terence Hobbs ( Suffocation ), A.J Magana, Jordan ( Disentomb ), Blue Jensen ( Guttural Secrete ), Ricki Merriweather ( Odiusembwel ) man this list could go on forever! I’ll stop here haha. 

 

6- What is the theme of the CDS? And why those titles?

 

“Instruments of Torture” is kind of an introduction to the tools and techniques used in the past…and in some cases still today. “Festival of Death” is kind of a morbid celebration of the entire ordeal. I studied a lot more about the average citizen’s perspective in regards to public executions and what witnessing such events meant. During this time I dug into more of the laws to different countries during that time, when there were records of it available. Of course all the albums have specific lyrics dealing with specific torture techniques or tools used. “Methods of Execution” was a little more experimental in regards to the art and some of the music. Lyrically we followed the same path as before.

 

 

7 - Tell us about the video "SLAVES TO THE PYRE"? And who was the director of this video? And how was the process of creation and editing?

 

I cannot remember the name of the guy that shot the video. He worked for the large WWE wrestling corporation. We filmed it in his basement in Atlanta GA, it was insanely hot in there with all the lighting. He had the entire room covered in black plastic, I don’t even know how many lights and cameras were in there….several for sure. Basically we tried to capture more of a live feeling than a “video”

I think we did about 6 play throughs of the song then he compiled the footage and edited over the course of two days.

 

8 - What is a BRODEQUIN concert like? Any special trips?

 

It would be hard to pick any special concert that is better than another. Hellfest was the last time Jon, Mike and I performed together so that one sticks out a bit. But really any of our festival appearances have been great privileges and I enjoyed all of them.

 

9 - Tell us about the scene from Knoxville, TENNESSEE, USA and how do you compare it to other scenes in the world?

 

The scene in Knoxville is VERY small. it has been doing better over the years due to some good promoters like Brandon Love ( Engulfed in Blackness ) he has been putting several shows together and building up the scene. Whitechapel is the most successful band to come from the area and have done very well for themselves. I have never met any of those guys, but they have definitely made their mark.

 

  

10 - What can you say about the current lineup, BRODEQUIN?

 

Currently Brodequin is myself on bass/vocals. Mike Bailey - guitar ( limited, very few live appearances ) Joaquin Chavez - guitar, Jan Lugtenberg - Drums. Mike and I live in Tennessee, Joaquin is in California and Jan is in The Netherlands. So you can see that its very difficult to make things happen with such distances between us.

 

11- "On this date in 1557, the long-dead bones of the Protestant theologians Martin Bucer and Paulus Phagius (Fagius) were sent to the stake during the Tudor era's brief Catholic recrudescence under Mary I.", Any special subject? Who is in charge of the lyrics and the concepts of the band?

 

Yeah thats a very strange thing to do, but there were many strange and bizarre acts like this throughout history. I write all of the lyrics and handle all of the artwork and layouts of the cds. shirts etc. I spent many years as a history student at the university and so all this inspiration comes from a large collection of books I have collected over the years. I still study the subject often, although after all these years I rarely come across something I haven’t heard of before. But it still fascinates me and inspires me to write about.

Entrevista BRODEQUIN EN INGLÉS - ESPAÑOL

 

 

Hablar de BRODEQUIN es hablar de una de las mejores bandas del BRUTAL DEATH METAL, que con sus tres CDS logro influenciar en la escena norteamericana y mundial, de hecho, revivió una escena, quedara en la historia su gran virtud, además son parte de otras bandas que son importantes en la escena, como es el caso de Liturgy y sus liricas de tortura, en la época de la inquisición y la cacería de brujas de los protestantes en América del Norte.

 

Hola BRODEQUIN, soy Ricardo Bedoya, director de la revista web SCUMZINE MAG, ¿cómo van las cosas en la banda? Y ¿cuál es la expectativa de venir a Colombia?

 

Hola Richard! Las cosas van bastante bien, aunque un poco lento debido a la distancia entre todos los integrantes de BRODEQUIN. Presenta algunos desafíos reales para la escritura y hace que sea imposible tener cualquier tipo de ensayo adecuado. En este punto, se requiere mucha disciplina por parte de los miembros individuales en lo que respecta a la práctica regular y el mantenimiento de su nivel de habilidad. Por ejemplo, cuando nos estamos preparando para un espectáculo, creo una lista establecida y luego uso un iPod o iPad y lo ejecutó a través de la configuración de mi amplificador para practicar con la "banda" jaja.

 

He escuchado muchas cosas grandiosas sobre Colombia de algunos de mis amigos que han viajado allí. Por lo que me han contado, espero encontrarme con muchos fanáticos apasionados del death metal brutal, ver paisajes increíbles y gente hermosa. He estado practicando mi español, pero no esperes mucho jaja.

 

1 - Han pasado 13 años desde el último álbum "METHODS OF EXECUTION", ¿qué podemos esperar del material de la banda otra vez? (temas nuevos, productor y estudio de grabación)

 

El tema seguirá siendo el mismo, que trata de la tortura y la ejecución medieval. La obra de arte que he estado armando está más al estilo de “FESTIVAL OF DEATH”. En cuanto al estudio de grabación en cuestión, no tenemos ningún lugar específico que estemos viendo.

Todavía tenemos mucho tiempo para decidir sobre un estudio de grabación durante el proceso de escritura.

 

2 - ¿Qué ha cambiado el sonido en BRODEQUIN?

 

Creo que cada vez que tengas nuevos miembros, el sonido cambiará debido a la forma en que tocan sus instrumentos. Joaquin usa una configuración de guitarra diferente a la de Mike, por lo que hay una diferencia que es inevitable. Mike todavía es un gran miembro de la banda y hemos estado escribiendo nueva música juntos. Jan tiene diferentes enfoques de las cosas que Jon, por lo que habrá algunas cosas que son un poco diferentes a las anteriores. En general, el sonido será similar al que hemos creado en el pasado, pero las pequeñas diferencias son inevitables.

 

3 - ¿Cuáles son las diferencias entre el primer álbum, INSTRUMENTS OF TORTURE”,  “FESTIVAL OF DEATH” y “METHODS OF EXECUTION” relacionados con la música y la letra?

 

Los temas líricos y las imágenes están muy relacionados y tocan nuestras fuentes usuales de inspiración, que son las técnicas de tortura y ejecución de la historia, procedimientos judiciales y sentencias medievales, etc. Con los "instrumentos de tortura" realmente estábamos profundizando en el tema, y ​​por Yo no hay nada más brutal que el tema de Brodequin. Es por eso que he seguido escribiendo sobre esto para cada álbum, el próximo álbum tendrá al menos 10 canciones basadas en el mismo tipo de brutalidad del pasado.

Musicalmente tratamos de ampliar nuestros límites en cada álbum en lo que respecta a la velocidad y la complejidad. Todavía hacemos eso, no veo mucho un punto en jugar en este género si no te estás desafiando a ti mismo. Honestamente, hay algunos nuevos riffs que Mike y yo hemos creado y que apenas puedo tocar en este punto jaja. Pero eso es lo que quiero decir, quiero esforzarme y mejorar con cada lanzamiento.

 

5 - ¿Hay un músico conocido particular que le gustaría usar en uno de sus próximos álbumes?

 

¡¡Esa es una pregunta muy difícil de responder !! jaja. ¡Tengo tantos amigos en la escena con los que me gustaría trabajar que sería imposible elegir solo uno! Siempre estoy abierto e interesado en trabajar con Matti Way (Abominable Putridity), Ricky Myers (Suffocation), Dan Louise (Cinerary), Lille Gruber (Defeated Sanity), Damian Leski (Gorgasm / Broken Hope), Dave Hunt (Anaal Nathrakh ), Angel Ochoa (Cephalotripsy), Terence Hobbs (Suffocation), AJ Magana, Jordania (Disentomb), Blue Jensen (Guttural Secrete), Ricki Merriweather (Odiusembwel) ¡esta lista podría continuar para siempre! Me detendré aquí jaja.

 

6- ¿Cuál es el tema del CDS? ¿Y por qué esos títulos?

 

" Instruments of Torture " es una especie de introducción a las herramientas y técnicas utilizadas en el pasado ... y en algunos casos aún hoy. " Festival of Death" es una especie de celebración morbosa de toda la prueba. Estudié mucho más sobre la perspectiva del ciudadano medio con respecto a las ejecuciones públicas y lo que significaba presenciar tales eventos. Durante este tiempo profundicé en más de las leyes a diferentes países durante ese tiempo, cuando había registros disponibles. Por supuesto, todos los álbumes tienen letras específicas relacionadas con técnicas o herramientas de tortura específicas. "Methods of Execution" fue un poco más experimental en lo que respecta al arte y parte de la música. Líricamente seguimos el mismo camino que antes.

 

7 - Cuéntanos sobre el video "SLAVES TO THE PYRE"?, ¿Y quién fue el director de este video? ¿Y cómo fue el proceso de creación y edición?

 

No recuerdo el nombre del chico que filmó el video. Trabajó para la gran corporación de lucha WWE. Lo filmamos en su sótano en Atlanta GA, estaba increíblemente caliente allí con toda la iluminación. Tenía la habitación entera cubierta de plástico negro, ni siquiera sé cuántas luces y cámaras había allí ... seguro varias. Básicamente, intentamos capturar más sentimiento en vivo que un "video"

Creo que hicimos aproximadamente 6 repeticiones de la canción, luego él compiló las imágenes y las editó en el transcurso de dos días.

 

8 - ¿Cómo es un concierto de BRODEQUIN?, ¿Cualquier viaje especial?

 

Sería difícil elegir un concierto especial que sea mejor que otro. Hellfest fue la última vez que Jon, Mike y yo actuamos juntos para que sobresalga un poco. Pero realmente cualquiera de nuestras apariciones en festivales ha sido un gran privilegio y los disfruté a todos.

 

9 - Cuéntanos sobre la escena de Knoxville, TENNESSEE, EE. UU. Y ¿cómo la comparas con otras escenas del mundo?

 

La escena en Knoxville es MUY pequeña. Ha estado mejorando a lo largo de los años debido a algunos buenos promotores como Brandon Love (Engulfed in Blackness) que ha estado organizando varios shows juntos y construyendo la escena. Whitechapel es la banda más exitosa del área y lo han hecho muy bien. Nunca he conocido a ninguno de esos tipos, pero definitivamente han dejado su huella.

 

10 - ¿Qué puedes decir sobre la alineación actual, BRODEQUIN?

 

Actualmente Brodequin soy yo mismo en el bajo / voz. Mike Bailey - guitarra (limitada, muy pocas presentaciones en vivo) Joaquin Chavez - guitarra, Jan Lugtenberg - Batería. Mike y yo vivimos en Tennessee, Joaquín está en California y Jan está en Holanda. Entonces puedes ver que es muy difícil hacer que las cosas sucedan con tales distancias entre nosotros.

Escribo todas las letras y manejo todas las ilustraciones y diseños de los CD. camisas, etc. Pasé muchos años como estudiante de historia en la universidad y toda esta inspiración proviene de una gran colección de libros que he recopilado a lo largo de los años. Todavía estudio el tema a menudo, aunque después de todos estos años rara vez me encuentro con algo de lo que nunca antes había oído hablar. Pero todavía me fascina y me inspira para escribir sobre.
