Here Ricardo Bedoya, from the magazine SCUMZINE MAG, How are things in the band?

 

Things are great. Our new album ‘Sea of Duress’ has been out for about two weeks now. We’re getting good press, and some good reactions to it. We’re also seeing a lot of new faces who are interested in Lago. So thats awesome.

 

1 How was the band formed? And why the name of LAGO?

 

I started the band in the fall of 2009. I was still in the Marines and I was stationed in California. I would drive home to Phoenix Arizona (where I was from) on the weekends and I would jam with Lago’s original drummer. It was honestly just for fun. There was no plan at the time for it to turn into what it has. It slowly kind of took on a life of its own due to the interest people had in it. As for the name Lago, we get asked this a lot by Spanish speaking fans. It means Lake in Spanish which I guess can kind of seem weird.

 

However, the idea of Lago comes from a Clint Eastwood movie called ‘High Plains Drifter’. If you haven’t seen it, basically this town hires a gun fighter to protect them. The town in this movie is called Lago. The gun fighter kind of learns that this town is actually really a corrupt town, and at the end of the movie before the bad guys come to attack the Lago he has the people that live there paint the town red and he renames it ‘Hell’. I just always thought that it would make for a really cool metal band name if you know the story behind it.

 

2 Let's start the interview talking about the new CD "SEA OF DURESS", what do you think about the final result of this work?

 

We were very pleased. Obviously, we’ll always be our own worst critics when it comes to our writing. There’s some really minor stuff i would have done differently after the fact but I think thats how anyone in a band is with their music. We had a really good team with our Engineer Ryan Butler, and Ken Scorceron mixing and mastering. I thought it just came out huge in terms of sound. The production is definetely beefy.

 

 

3 What is the meaning of the title? And what is the theme of the CD?

 

I don’t know if there is neccassarily a ‘theme’ or ‘concept’ but our lyrics seem to center around depression, isolation, and the fear of tyranny. I think theres some definite political undertones on this record more so than anything we’ve done in the past. The title kind of just speaks to the times that we’re currently living in as human beings on this earth. It’s a crazy world right now.

 

4 How was the acceptance of the CD by the press and the fans?

 

It’s been very well recieved. I’m honestly surprised at how well things have been going. One of the worst things ive heard is someone called us a “boring immolation”. Hey, i’m okay with that! haha.

 

5 Why decided to take this job with UNIQUE LEADER RECORDS having bands like DEEDS OF FLESH, PYREXIA , OMNIHILITY, RISINGS OF SATURN among other bands What are the expectations of the band for all the work ?, ?; How long does it take to make UNIQUE LEADER RECORDS contract?

 

We had been talking to a few labels. Unique Leader Records just made us feel comfortable and gave us the best deal. Also there was a point in my life where I bought everything the label put out so there so the familiarity with the label helped in making a decision. I think it maybe took a month of talks before we finally signed the deal.

 

6 What does the cover of "SEA OF DURESS" mean? and How was the creation process with the artist?

 

It’s basically showing a person or being knowingly turning away from faith or a “heaven” to navigate rough waters. It’s kind of a story of someone who’s lost their faith and just accepting the world for what it is. This was the general idea that we had for artist Nate Burns, and thats what he came up with. I was really excited about it. It’s not a typical death metal album cover though so I was worried about what people would think. But it’s been very well recieved.

 

7 How long have you writing and recording the album? And Tell us how was the recording and mixing the new CD " SEA OF DURESS”?

 

We spent about 8 months writing the songs before we entered the studio. The recording process was good. We’ve worked with Ryan Butler at Arcane Digital Recordings on several occasions. He always has a general idea of what we’re trying to do so it makes the whole process smooth. Having Ken Sorceron mix and master our material has really been the next step for us. He really made the record sound big.

 

8 How things were with the distribution of the press with the previous album "TYRANNY" and the EP "MARIANAS"

 

Marianas didn’t have anywhere near as much press as our other releases, but it was really one of those releases that caught on via word of mouth. To this day I still have people contact me saying they just now heard it. For Tyranny we had an actually PR company do it so the reaction was great. We had a lot of outlets talk about the record. Even still, we have people that had never heard of us until ‘Sea of Duress’ came out. So each realease has been bigger than the previous.

9 Tell us about SPLIT with the Polish band CALM HATCHERY? 9 Tell us about SPLIT with the Polish band CALM HATCHERY?

 

I had done an album trade with Selfmadegod records and one of the bands i got in trade was Calm Hatchery and I immediately was really into them. They’re a killer band. Lago hit a point where we didn’t have any plans for a record anytime soon so we thought a split would be cool. So we contacted Calm Hatchery to see if they would be interested and they were. That ended up being a co release between Selfmadegod Records, and Battleground Records.

 

 

10 ¿What can be said of video LAGO “SOILED IS THE CROWN”?, What was edited?, Why this song? And what is the message of the song?

 

It was interesting. I honestly didn’t want to do a video to begin with. I’m always so critical of other peoples videos that I would hate to be a part of something that didn’t turn out good. I also didn’t really feel like a band like us needed a video. But, the more I talked with director Matti Way the more I became comfortable with the idea. We initially wanted to do the song ‘Providence’ but without a real storyline with actors it would have made for a very long video.

 

Our second choice ended up being ‘Soiled is the Crown’ which was going to be the first song to be debuted from the album anyways. We were really pleased with how it came out. The lighting was awesome. The song itself focuses on the division that politics has caused in society. It questions the idea that people think politics has gotten worse, when in reality politicians have always been scumbags... we just have the ability to see them for what they are at all times due to social media and things like that.

 

11 How do LAGO musical composition? And what is the issue?

 

There isn’t anything really exciting about it. Either myself or Gus will get a handful of riffs that we think will work well within a song and we try to build on it from there. This album however both Gus and myself wrote two songs completely on our own. That was a first for Lago as all of our previous material always had multiple band members riffs in each song.

 

12 How is a LAGO concert?

​

We don’t really have any stage antics or anything. We’re very straight forward. We ring out between songs and we don’t talk during our set. We get up there and give the audience death metal and don’t waste anyones time with annoying stage banter.

 

13 What do you know about the Colombian scene?

​

Funny you mention it... When I was in the Marines I had a kid that worked for me that was from Columbia. He found out I was into death metal and turns out he was too. He’d always tell me stories about how he was into Carcass and some of those early Earache bands and how he had heard it from his friends while growing up there. I know extreme forms of metal are pretty big in south america in general. We’d actually love to get down there at some point. Obviously that will take some planning.

Las cosas son geniales. Nuestro nuevo álbum 'SEA OF ​​DURESS' ha salido hace unas dos semanas. Recibimos buena prensa y algunas buenas reacciones al respecto. También estamos viendo muchas caras nuevas que están interesadas en Lago. Entonces eso es asombroso

 

1 ¿Cómo se formó la banda? ¿Y por qué el nombre de LAGO?

 

Empecé la banda en el otoño de 2009. Todavía estaba en la Infantería de Marina y estaba estacionado en California. Manejaba a casa a Phoenix Arizona (de donde venía) los fines de semana y me metía con el baterista original de Lago. Honestamente fue solo por diversión. No había un plan en el momento para que se convirtiera en lo que es ahora. Lentamente adquirió vida propia debido al interés que la gente tenía en él. En cuanto al nombre de Lago, los aficionados de habla hispana nos preguntan esto mucho. Significa Lago en español, que supongo que puede parecer extraño.

Sin embargo, la idea de Lago proviene de una película de Clint Eastwood llamada 'High Plains Drifter'. Si no lo has visto, básicamente esta ciudad contrata a un luchador para protegerlos. La ciudad en esta película se llama Lago. El peleador aprende que esta ciudad es realmente una ciudad corrupta, y al final de la película antes de que los malos lleguen al Lago, la gente que vive allí pinta la ciudad roja y la llama "HELL”. Siempre pensé que sería un nombre genial para una banda de metal si conoces la historia detrás de eso.

 

2 Comencemos la entrevista hablando sobre el nuevo CD "SEA OF DURESS", ¿qué opinas sobre el resultado final de este trabajo?

 

Estamos muy contentos Obviamente, siempre seremos nuestros peores críticos cuando se trata de escribir. Hay algunas cosas realmente menores que hubiera hecho de manera diferente después del hecho, pero creo que así es como alguien en una banda está con su música. Tuvimos un equipo realmente bueno con nuestro Ingeniero Ryan Butler y Ken Scorceron mezclando y masterizando. Pensé que simplemente salió enorme en términos de sonido. La producción es definitivamente carnosa.

 

 

3 ¿Cuál es el significado del título? ¿Y cuál es el tema del CD?

 

No sé si existe necesariamente un 'theme' o 'concept, pero nuestras letras parecen centrarse en la depresión, el aislamiento y el temor a la tiranía. Creo que hay algunos matices políticos definidos en este registro más que cualquier cosa que hayamos hecho en el pasado. El título simplemente habla de los tiempos en que vivimos actualmente como seres humanos en esta tierra. Es un mundo loco en este momento.

4 ¿Cómo fue la aceptación del CD por la prensa y los fanáticos?

 

Ha sido muy bien recibido. Estoy honestamente sorprendido de lo bien que han estado yendo las cosas. Una de las peores cosas que he escuchado es que alguien nos llamó una “BORING IMMOLATION”. ¡Oye, estoy bien con eso!  jaja.

 

5 ¿Por qué decidieron tomar este trabajo con UNIQUE LEADER RECORDS con bandas como DEEDS OF FLESH, PYREXIA, OMNIHILITY, RISINGS OF SATURN entre otras bandas? ¿Cuáles son las expectativas de la banda para todo el trabajo?,; ¿Cuánto tiempo lleva hacer un contrato de UNIQUE LEADER RECORDS?

 

Estuvimos hablando con algunas etiquetas. Unique Leader Records nos hizo sentir cómodos y nos dio el mejor trato. También hubo un momento en mi vida en el que compré todo lo que sacaba la etiqueta, así que la familiaridad con la etiqueta me ayudó a tomar una decisión. Creo que tal vez tomó un mes de conversaciones antes de que finalmente firmáramos el trato.

 

6 ¿Qué significa la cubierta de "SEA OF DURESS"? y ¿Cómo fue el proceso de creación con el artista?

 

Básicamente se trata de mostrar a una persona o alejarse a sabiendas de la fe o un "HEAVEN" para navegar aguas turbulentas. Es una especie de historia de alguien que ha perdido su fe y solo acepta el mundo por lo que es. Esta fue la idea general que teníamos para el artista Nate Burns, y eso es lo que se le ocurrió. Estaba muy emocionado por eso. Aunque no es una portada típica de un álbum de death metal, estaba preocupado por lo que la gente pensaría. Pero ha sido muy bien recibido.

 

7 ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas escribiendo y grabando el álbum? ¿Y cuéntanos cómo fue la grabación y la mezcla del nuevo CD “SEA OF DURESS”?

 

Pasamos cerca de 8 meses escribiendo las canciones antes de ingresar al estudio. El proceso de grabación fue bueno. Hemos trabajado con Ryan Butler en Arcane Digital Recordings en varias ocasiones. Él siempre tiene una idea general de lo que estamos tratando de hacer para que todo el proceso sea fluido. Hacer que Ken Sorceron mezcle y domine nuestro material ha sido realmente el siguiente paso para nosotros. Realmente hizo que el disco suene a lo grande.

 

8 Cómo estaban las cosas con la distribución de la prensa con el álbum anterior "TYRANNY" y el EP "MARIANAS"

 

Marianas no tenía casi tanta presión como nuestros otros lanzamientos, pero fue realmente uno de esos lanzamientos que se transmitió de boca en boca. Hasta el día de hoy todavía tengo personas que me contactan diciendo que lo acaban de escuchar. Para Tiranía, tuvimos una compañía de relaciones públicas que lo hizo, así que la reacción fue genial. Hemos hablado mucho sobre el disco. Aun así, tenemos personas que nunca habían oído hablar de nosotros hasta que salió "SEA OF ​​DURESS". Entonces, cada lanzamiento ha sido más grande que el anterior.

Había hecho un álbum de intercambio con discos de Selfmadegod y una de las bandas que obtuve en el comercio fue Calm Hatchery y de inmediato me gustaron mucho. Son una banda asesina. Lago llegó a un punto en el que no teníamos planes de grabar pronto, así que pensamos que una división sería genial. Entonces contactamos a Calm Hatchery para ver si estarían interesados ​​y lo estaban. Eso terminó siendo un lanzamiento de co entre Selfmadegod Records y Battleground Records.

 

 

10 ¿Qué se puede decir del video LAGO "SOILED IS THE CROWN" ?, ¿Qué fue editado ?, ¿Por qué esta canción? ¿Y cuál es el mensaje de la canción?

 

Fue interesante. Honestamente, no quería hacer un video para empezar. Siempre soy tan crítico con los videos de otras personas que odiaría ser parte de algo que no resultó bien. Además, realmente no sentía que una banda como nosotros necesitara un video. Pero cuanto más hablaba con el director Matti Way, me sentía cómodo con la idea. Inicialmente queríamos hacer la canción 'Providence', pero sin una historia real con actores que hubiera sido para un video muy largo.

 

Nuestra segunda opción terminó siendo 'Soiled is the Crown', que iba a ser la primera canción que se debutaría del álbum de todos modos. Estamos muy contentos con cómo salió. La iluminación fue increíble. La canción en sí misma se enfoca en la división que la política ha causado en la sociedad. Cuestiona la idea de que las personas piensan que la política ha empeorado, cuando en realidad los políticos siempre han sido unos cabrones (...) solo tenemos la capacidad de verlos como son en todo momento debido a las redes sociales y cosas por el estilo.

 

11 ¿Cómo es la composición musical de LAGO?

 

No hay nada realmente emocionante al respecto. O bien yo o Gus obtendremos un puñado de riffs que creemos que funcionarán bien dentro de una canción y trataremos de seguir creciendo a partir de ahí. Este álbum, sin embargo, tanto Gus como yo escribimos dos canciones completamente por nuestra cuenta. Esa fue la primera vez para Lago, ya que todo nuestro material anterior siempre tenía riffs de miembros múltiples en cada canción.

 

12 ¿Cómo es un concierto de LAGO?

​

Realmente no tenemos payasadas de escenario ni nada. Somos muy directos. Tocamos entre canciones y no hablamos durante nuestro set. Nos acercamos y le damos a la audiencia el death metal y no perdemos el tiempo de nadie con una molesta broma teatral.

 

13 ¿Qué sabes sobre la escena colombiana?

​

Es curioso que lo menciones ... Cuando estaba en la Infantería de Marina, tuve un niño que trabajaba para mí y que era de Columbia. Descubrió que estaba metido en el death metal y resulta que él también. Él siempre me contaba historias sobre cómo estaba con Carcass y algunas de esas primeras bandas de Earache y cómo lo había escuchado de sus amigos mientras crecía allí. Sé que las formas extremas de metal son bastante grandes en Sudamérica en general. De hecho, nos encantaría llegar allí en algún momento. Obviamente, eso requerirá algo de planificación.
