OUBLIETTE - INTERVIEW - ENTREVISTA ENGLISH / SPANISH
"THE PASSAGE" is a work that shows the darkness, the depression of opaque atmospheres, a fog, the desolation of the gloom, with a heartbreaking voice, full of hate and desolation.
Here Ricardo Bedoya, from SCUMZINE MAG magazine, how are things going in the band?
Things are going well right now. Pretty quiet currently but we are working on a lot of new material for our third album and playing a couple of shows here and there.
How was the band formed? And why the name of OUBLIETTE?
Emily and I formed the project just the two of us back in 2011. It was more of just a thing to do for fun in our spare time. We got a couple friends to record the first album with us, and then decided we wanted to bring it to the stage shortly after. The name OUBLIETTE was picked because it seemed like a fitting definition for this type of music, and also it is very unique sounding, haha.
We started the interview talking about the new CD “THE PASSAGE”, what do you think about the final result of this work?
I’m still happy with it. Of course there are always things I want to go back in time and change, but it stands as a good representation of exactly what we wanted to do. We have been playing some of those songs live for a long time now, so I’m feeling pretty motivated to get the next album done!
Tell us about the recording process and the mixing of the new CD THE PASSAGE ”?
The drums were recorded at a rehearsal facility that Greg and I owned at the time. We knocked those out in a couple of days, and then they pretty much sat on my hard drive for far too long before we finished everything else. I think it was about 8 or 9 months later when we finished the rest of the tracking. Everything else was recorded at my house, as well as the mixing. That was a pretty speedy process once it started. The mastering was done by Zak Denham.
Have you received the attention of fans and the extreme press?
Yes, the album was pretty well received by all.
What is the meaning of the title? And what is the theme of the CD?
The lyrics are a story of a mother losing her child and succumbing to extreme depression, and eventually suicide. The title of the album can be interpreted a couple of ways, but mostly it refers to the transition or entrance into death.
What are the differences between the first album “APPARITIONS” and “THE PASSAGE”?
The Passage was a bit more of a collaborative effort and I think it was a bit more mature sounding. Apparitions was recorded long distance between all of the members too, so it was nice for me to be more hands-on with The Passage.
How was the creation of cover art with Justin Abraham? What does the cover of “THE PASSAGE” mean? And how was the creation process?
Working with Justin was great. I sent him the lyrics and the pre-production audio early on, and told him what I wanted basically. He did a killer job stepping out of his comfort zone and depicting the lyrical themes in a style he doesn’t usually use.
The cover is a depiction of the lyrics somewhere in between “The Raven’s Lullaby” and “Barren.” The woman is mourning her child in the woods near her house with a raven overlooking her, to symbolize the mysterious force surrounding her.
Justin also did a piece for the back of the album, with the song titles carved into a tree and the bloody dagger (as a reference to the end of “Barren”) stabbed into the tree.
What is it like to work with three guitars in black metal? And how is the process of musical composition?
I like to write lots of harmonized parts, so it comes pretty natural to write a rhythm, melody, and harmony part. I do most of the writing by myself at home before I bring it to everyone else.
What is an OUBLIETTE concert like?
Dim lighting, fog, and no talking to the crowd in between songs, haha.
Future plans and final comment?
For now, just working on the next album! Thanks for the interview and I hope we can come to Colombia one day!

“THE PASSAGE”, es un trabajo que muestra la oscuridad, la depresión de atmósferas opacas, una niebla, la desolación de la penumbra, con una desgarradora voz aguda, llena de odio y desolación.
Aquí Ricardo Bedoya, de la revista SCUMZINE MAG, ¿cómo van las cosas en la banda?
Las cosas van bien ahora. Actualmente es bastante tranquilo, pero estamos trabajando en un montón de material nuevo para nuestro tercer álbum y tocando un par de shows aquí y allá.
¿Cómo se formó la banda? ¿Y por qué el nombre de OUBLIETTE?
Emily y yo formamos el proyecto solo nosotros dos en 2011. Fue más que algo para hacer por diversión en nuestro tiempo libre. Tenemos un par de amigos para grabar el primer álbum con nosotros, y luego decidimos que queríamos llevarlo al escenario poco después. El nombre OUBLIETTE fue elegido porque parecía una definición adecuada para este tipo de música, y también tiene un sonido único, jaja.
Comenzamos la entrevista hablando sobre el nuevo CD "THE PASSAGE", ¿qué opinas sobre el resultado final de este trabajo?
Todavía estoy feliz con eso. Por supuesto, siempre hay cosas que quiero retroceder en el tiempo y cambiar, pero es una buena representación de lo que queríamos hacer. Hemos estado tocando algunas de esas canciones en vivo durante mucho tiempo, ¡así que me siento bastante motivado para hacer el próximo álbum!
Cuéntanos sobre el proceso de grabación y la mezcla del nuevo CD “THE PASSAGE ”?
Los tambores fueron grabados en una instalación de ensayo que Greg y yo teníamos en ese momento. Los eliminamos en un par de días, y luego se quedaron en mi disco duro durante demasiado tiempo antes de terminar todo lo demás. Creo que fue alrededor de 8 o 9 meses después cuando terminamos el resto del seguimiento. Todo lo demás fue grabado en mi casa, así como la mezcla. Ese fue un proceso bastante rápido una vez que comenzó. La masterización fue realizada por Zak Denham.
¿Has recibido la atención de los fanáticos y la prensa extrema?
Sí, el álbum fue muy bien recibido por todos.
¿Cuál es el significado del título? ¿Y cuál es el tema del CD?
La letra es la historia de una madre que pierde a su hijo y sucumbe a la depresión extrema y, finalmente, al suicidio. El título del álbum se puede interpretar de dos maneras, pero principalmente se refiere a la transición o entrada en la muerte.
¿Cuáles son las diferencias entre el primer álbum "APPARITIONS" y "THE PASSAGE"?
"THE PASSAGE" fue un poco más un esfuerzo de colaboración y creo que sonó un poco más maduro. "APPARITIONS" también se registraron a larga distancia entre todos los miembros, por lo que fue bueno para mí ser más práctico con THE PASSAGE.
¿Cómo fue la creación de la portada con Justin Abraham? ¿Qué significa la portada de "EL PASAJE"? ¿Y cómo fue el proceso de creación?
Trabajar con Justin fue genial. Le envié la letra y el audio de preproducción desde el principio, y básicamente le dije lo que quería. Hizo un trabajo asesino saliendo de su zona de confort y representando los temas líricos en un estilo que no suele usar.
La portada es una representación de la letra en algún lugar entre "THE RAVEN’S LULLABY" y "BARREN". La mujer está de luto por su hijo en el bosque cerca de su casa con un cuervo que la mira, para simbolizar la fuerza misteriosa que la rodea.
Justin también hizo una pieza para la parte posterior del álbum, con los títulos de las canciones tallados en un árbol y la daga ensangrentada (como referencia al final de "Barren") apuñaló en el árbol.
¿Cómo es trabajar con tres guitarras en black metal? ¿Y cómo es el proceso de composición musical?
Me gusta escribir muchas partes armonizadas, por lo que es bastante natural escribir una parte de ritmo, melodía y armonía. Yo hago la mayor parte de la escritura solo en casa antes de llevarlo a todos los demás.
¿Cómo es un concierto de OUBLIETTE?
Iluminación tenue, niebla y no hablar con la multitud entre canciones, jaja.
¿Planes futuros y comentario final?
Por ahora, ¡solo estoy trabajando en el próximo álbum! ¡Gracias por la entrevista y espero que podamos venir a Colombia algún día!
