Here Ricardo Bedoya SUMZINE magazine, How's it going in the band?
Hello from the Capital Region of Upstate New York! David Seacord here. It’s going well! We just did our “CD release” show up here at the beginning of the month of July and it was a pretty big success for us...otherwise, we are working on scheduling more shows. We have five or six coming up at this time with hopefully more in the works...my personal goal is to branch out whenever we can and eventually play our music overseas. Also, our guitarist Dave Matthews is preparing to do some recording for his second album with his other band Skinless soon, as well as continuing to build his line of DMOG (Dave Matthews Original Guitars) guitars. And our drummer John has been playing with and preparing to do some recording with his other group Burial, who do very brutal, guttural death metal.
1 -Let's start by talking about "PREY FOR US"?
Ok, PREY FOR US is our second release but the first with a label attached, Ultimate Massacre Productions, who we are very proud to be associated with! We truly believe that this is the best music we’ve ever made and for me personally I put a lot of heart, pain, hurt and hope into it if that makes sense. We recorded the album “when we could,” in between work schedules with our friends Chris Costakis and Jared Weed of Crunchmaker studios. They did a phenomenal job with the mix! Then I got a line on getting mastering done with Alan Douches at the renowned West West Side Studio, and he provided us with a devastating-yet-clear master. We lucked out and were able to get killer artwork from Remy at Headsplit design, thanks to Serge and Mallika at UMP, and they of course helped us with the rest of getting the album out there.
As an artist, yes there are always things that you “wish” you could’ve done differently, but the end result is something I’m very happy with, especially the songs!
2 What is the meaning and inspiration of the CD title "PREY FOR US"?
“PREY FOR US” is a play on words. “PREY” as in what a predator eats instead of “PRAYing to God.” Dave Matthews came up with the original idea and it goes like this:
in the USA we have not only forces in our government but also religious organizations that always want us afraid of “others.” At the same time, whenever there’s violence in this country that results in mass-killing, which is practically every day, these same people and entities will offer the meaningless gesture of “we’re sending our thoughts and prayers,” which doesn’t really help anyone affected by the violence. After a few days or a week or so of “thoughts and prayers,” this country always seems to collectively shrug it’s shoulders, and then the next mass murder occurs, and the cycle repeats itself. So, while you give us your “thoughts and prayers,” there’s always someone preparing to murder again that you’re not stopping, so you can “PRAY” all you want, you’re really just “PREY” for the people who would rather you be dead and you’re not really doing anything to stop them.
We decided to go with “PREY FOR US” as the title because you can also apply it in other ways to the themes of the album, which I’ll get into later in this interview...it works!
3 What does the cover of the CD represent?
Ok, the big guy on the front with the skull and the suit/tie and the tentacles coming off of its head, I have dubbed him the “Corporate Overlord.” The little guys at the bottom have lined up at the feet of the Overlord and the Overlord is throwing them around like toys he has to play with. You also see a crumbling city skyline and money getting thrown around, too. The little men need money, so the idea is they are letting the Overlord have his way with them in order to get paid and survive. This ties into a few of the songs on the record...in relation to the album title, I guess the little guys are the “Prey!”
4 Could you tell us the most important aspects of "PREY FOR US", Is it your second recording?
Yes sir, this is the second recording for Incontinence. I would say the most important aspects of the album are as follows:
First, before we officially signed up with UMP to do the album, we had our “demo” album that we had released (Infecting Paranoid Minds) but no additional songs written, just little ideas here and there. However, I was confident that there were enough “little ideas” that would become 6 or 7 songs and that we would collect additional ideas to get it up to 8 songs. Because of the “style” we have, the songs tend to be a little longer, like 5-6 minutes on average, so we ended up setting a goal of coming up with 8 quality songs for a proper full-length. And I think we did it!
Second, this was definitely the “fastest” we’ve put together songs, both the music and the lyrics. All of the eight songs were written, rehearsed and recorded over the course of around a year.
Third, one of the keys to the album was the use of eight-string guitars and the dawn of Dave M’s guitar building. Before we wrote anything for this album, Dave M had just started building his own guitars, something he has always wanted to do but never had. Turns out he’s really good at it! He had told me he was going to “build an eight string guitar for you so you can write some super chunky riffs!” And he did! I now own the 3rd guitar he ever built. So the guitars you hear on the album are mainly the ones he built, the eight-string ones, and you hear those on 7 of the 8 songs. Our goal from there was to use the 8-string axes to add an extra layer to our sound with a gnarly ultra low “E” tuning.
5 What can we say "INFECTING PARANOID MINDS"?
That is our first release. We totally “did it ourselves!” It was officially released by us in September of 2014. It also represents my first efforts at a few things. First, playing with more than 6 strings...half of this album was written with 6 string guitars while the other half was written with 7 string guitars. Second, it is my first effort ever at being both a guitarist and vocalist. I pushed myself to learn how...Dave M already had experience both playing and singing with his prior project Dry Heave, so I decided that if I could learn like he did, we could avoid having to get a standalone singer and simplify the band structure in the process. We ended up having a fantastic dual vocal attack on this album in addition to the twin guitar attack!
I’m proud of Infecting Paranoid Minds...I think the songs are all really good, although you can definitely hear the progression on the new album Prey For Us. At some point, I hope to “reissue” this album along with some bonus songs, but that’s a thought that’s way off in the distance right now!
6 - How to make the composition in INCONTINENCE? And what is the theme of the band?
All bands collaborate differently, what works for us doesn’t necessarily work for everyone by any means! Basically I’ll take my own riff ideas along with ideas from the other guys and work on them until I come up with a complete song structure with two rhythm guitar parts. I do this all in my head. I try to work at it until, in my mind, it flows “correctly” and the songs stand apart from one another...very important to me that we aren’t making songs where you can confuse one with the other. The other “rule” is that we end up with songs that allow us to play within our own abilities and make the most out of what we can do well.
Once I have a song structure in my head with the riffs all laid out, I’ll usually do a “drum machine demo” with a drum program I have on my computer along with the two rhythm guitar tracks. I do this to give our drummer an idea of what was going on inside my head, but also so the rest of the band can hear it and learn and shoot ideas back at it. We’ll fine-tune the song from there. Lyrics and guitar solos always come last!
As for the “theme” of this band, there isn’t a strict underlying theme but I will say that the songs all touch on topics that are the product of our environments. Like me, I have been working in “retail” for almost 20 years, so I’ll write songs about what I see and feel from being locked in that environment week in and week out. We write songs about “real life” from our points of view for the most part...our viewpoints are decidedly bleak, but mainly from the perspective of having no hope, having your soul sucked dry, having no way out of depression, being pissed off at how selfish others are, feeling like you have no control over your own life, etc. These are topics we can write about from experience, so it comes easier.
7 - Tell us about the cover concept of "PREY FOR US" And how was the creation process?
I touched on the cover art concept earlier, but I’ll add that our label UMP got us hooked up with Remy at Headsplit Design to do the artwork. All we gave him was descriptions of the song topics and he turned around and nailed it. I couldn’t be happier with what he came up with for us, it’s really good and eye-catching, creepy and scary without being gory.
8- How does the United States, and its future as a world power?
Not sure where to begin or end on this question, I feel like I could talk about this forever. Let me talk a little about a few of the songs on the new album that tie into this question. Currently, it feels to me like the conservative movement that is now in power in this country doesn’t view regular people like you and I as “people,” but either ASSETS or LIABILITIES. I write about that in “Capitalist Martyr,” which is about corporate overlords shaming the common employee into working endless hours for less pay. This conservative movement is backed by more money than you would believe. We have the people with the money controlling the message to regular people, dividing us regular people against one another when we really should all be united against the extremely wealthy and their abuse of power, which is what I write about in “The Outrage Machine.” Finally, we the people of the USA somehow chose to elect President Trump. I feel that Trump came to power by exploiting the fear and hatred that so many cling to in this country...not just the fear and hatred of his opponent in the election Clinton but also by exploiting the fear and hatred that many have of poor people and minority groups. It’s a bizarre thing to try to explain, but I attempt to in “Cryptofascist,” which is about the rise of Trump and his loyal following…”Masses on a mission, to take back what they think they’ve lost.” These people honestly believe that they are missing out on something if a poor or minority group person receives government assistance in any way. To sum up, I love my country and am thankful to live where I can freely express my views without much fear, but I’m not very impressed with the hateful minded people who have rose to power.
9 Tell us about the concerts, festivals and tours? And tell us about an anecdote?
So far, we haven’t yet gone on a proper tour, but hopefully that will change. We have been fortunate to get involved with some solid gigs...our first show ever in 2013, we got to meet Gorod from France, which was awesome. We got to do direct support for Nile when they came around. We just had a quite successful CD release show in our area with our friends Dehumanized (NYDM legends). The past two years, we have been involved in the “HothFest,” which has had us playing alongside bands such as Defeated Sanity and others.
I don’t have any really funny anecdotes, but it has been very enjoyable getting to meet and talk to some of these bands that are making waves and some of my influences over the past three+ years.
10 How is the scene in your area?
The scene in our area is probably like any other scene in our country, it runs hot and cold. There is a ton of influence from the hardcore scene. I mentioned earlier that Dave M is also a member of Skinless, who are also a huge influence on the death metal bands in our area. You can arguably hear them in our music here and there. Ultimately, the “scene” or lack thereof is a direct result of what people put into it. My advice to younger bands trying to promote their own shows would be to not solely rely on “facebook spam” to promote, you have to get your boots on the ground and physically hand out flyers at all of the other shows leading up to your own band’s show...keeping up appearances helps! Whatever the case, we have been fortunate to see a wide variety of heavy bands here over the years, so we can’t complain! Heavy metal music is a strong and as diverse as it’s ever been!
11 Final comment? And something you want to add

Acabamos de hacer nuestra "lanzamiento de CD" aparecer aquí a principios del mes de julio y fue un gran éxito para nosotros ... de lo contrario, estamos trabajando en la programación de más espectáculos. 1-Comencemos por hablar de "PREY FOR US"?

2 ¿Cuál es el significado y la inspiración del título de CD "PREY FOR US"?
"PREY FOR US" es un juego de palabras. "PREY", como en lo que come un depredador en lugar de “PRAYING TO GOD.” Dave Matthews se le ocurrió la idea original y dice así:
En Estados Unidos no sólo tenemos fuerzas en nuestro gobierno, sino también organizaciones religiosas que siempre quieren que tengamos miedo de los "OTHERS". Al mismo tiempo, cuando hay violencia en este país que da lugar a asesinatos masivos, prácticamente todos los días, estos Las mismas personas y entidades ofrecerán el gesto sin sentido de "estamos enviando nuestros pensamientos y oraciones", que realmente no ayuda a nadie afectado por la violencia. Después de unos días o una semana o más de "THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS", este país siempre parece encogerse colectivamente hombros, y luego el próximo asesinato en masa se produce, y el ciclo se repite. Sí señor, ésta es la segunda grabación para Incontinencia. Yo diría que los aspectos más importantes del álbum son los siguientes:
Primero, antes de que nos firmamos oficialmente con UMP para hacer el álbum, teníamos nuestro álbum "demo" que habíamos lanzado (Infecting Paranoid Minds) pero ninguna canción adicional escrita, sólo pequeñas ideas aquí y allá. Sin embargo, estaba seguro de que había suficientes “little ideas” que se convertirían en 6 o 7 canciones y que recogeríamos ideas adicionales para conseguir hasta 8 canciones. Debido al “style” que tenemos, las canciones tienden a ser un poco más largas, como 5-6 minutos en promedio, por lo que terminamos el establecimiento de un objetivo de llegar con 8 canciones de calidad para una adecuada de larga duración. 5 ¿Qué podemos decir "INFECTING PARANOID MINDS"?
Ese es nuestro primer lanzamiento. ¡Lo hicimos nosotros mismos! "Fue lanzado oficialmente por nosotros en septiembre de 2014. También representa mis primeros esfuerzos en algunas cosas. Primero, tocando con más de 6 cuerdas ... la mitad de este álbum fue escrita con 6 cuerdas, mientras que la otra mitad fue escrita con 7 cuerdas. Segundo, es mi primer esfuerzo en ser guitarrista y vocalista. Me puse a aprender cómo ... Básicamente voy a tomar mis propias ideas riff junto con las ideas de los otros chicos y trabajar en ellos hasta llegar a una estructura de la canción completa con dos partes de guitarra rítmica. Lo hago todo en mi cabeza. Trato de trabajar en ello hasta que, en mi mente, fluya “correctly” y las canciones se aparte unas de otras ... muy importante para mí que no estamos haciendo canciones en las que se puede confundir uno con el otro. La otra “rule” es que terminamos con canciones que nos permiten jugar dentro de nuestras propias habilidades y sacar el máximo provecho de lo que podemos hacer bien.
Una vez que tenga una estructura de canción en mi cabeza con los riffs todos dispuestos, normalmente haré una “drum machine demo” con un programa de batería que tengo en mi computadora junto con las dos pistas de guitarra rítmica. Hago esto para darle a nuestro baterista una idea de lo que estaba pasando dentro de mi cabeza, pero también para que el resto de la banda pueda oírlo y aprender y disparar ideas de nuevo en él. Ajustaremos la canción desde allí. ¡Las líricas y los solos de la guitarra vienen siempre último!
En cuanto al "tema" de esta banda, no hay un tema subyacente estricto, pero diré que todas las canciones tocan temas que son el producto de nuestros entornos. Al igual que yo, he estado trabajando en "retail (AL PORMENOR)" por casi 20 años, así que escribiré canciones sobre lo que veo y siento de estar encerrado en ese ambiente semana tras semana. Escribimos canciones sobre la “real life” desde nuestros puntos de vista en su mayor parte ... nuestros puntos de vista son decididamente sombríos, pero sobre todo desde la perspectiva de no tener esperanza, tener su alma chupada, no tener salida de la depresión, el ser Enfadados por lo egoístas que son los demás, sintiendo que no tienen control sobre su propia vida, etc. Estos son temas que podemos escribir sobre la experiencia, por lo que es más fácil.
7 - Cuéntanos sobre el concepto de cobertura de "PREY FOR US" ¿Y cómo fue el proceso de creación?
He tocado el concepto de arte de portada antes, pero voy a añadir que nuestra etiqueta UMP nos consiguió conectados con Remy en el diseño de Headsplit para hacer la obra de arte. Todo lo que le dimos fue descripciones de los temas de la canción y se dio la vuelta y lo clavó. No podría estar más feliz con lo que él vino para arriba con nosotros, él es realmente bueno y llamativo, espeluznante y asustadizo sin ser sangriento.
8- ¿Qué hacen los Estados Unidos y su futuro como potencia mundial?
No estoy seguro de por dónde empezar o terminar en esta pregunta, ciento que podría hablar de esto para siempre. Permítanme hablar un poco sobre algunas de las canciones en el nuevo álbum que empate en esta pregunta. En la actualidad, me parece que el movimiento conservador que ahora está en el poder en este país no ve a las personas regulares como tú y yo como "gente", sino como ACTIVOS o PASIVOS. Escribo acerca de eso en “Capitalist Martyr”, que trata sobre los señores corporativos que avergüenzan al empleado común en horas interminables de trabajo por menos paga. Este movimiento conservador está respaldado por más dinero del que creerías. 9 Cuéntanos sobre los conciertos, festivales y tours? ¿Y cuéntanos sobre una anécdota?
Hasta ahora, todavía no hemos hecho una gira adecuada, pero espero que eso cambie. Hemos sido afortunados de involucrarnos con algunos conciertos sólidos ... nuestro primer show nunca en 2013, tuvimos que conocer Gorod de Francia, que fue impresionante. Tenemos que hacer apoyo directo al Nilo cuando vinieron. Acabamos de tener un disco de lanzamiento de CD bastante exitoso en nuestra zona con nuestros amigos Dehumanized (leyendas de NYDM). En los últimos dos años, hemos estado involucrados en el "HothFest", que nos ha hecho tocar junto a bandas como Defeated Sanity y otros.
No tengo anécdotas realmente divertidas, pero ha sido muy agradable llegar a conocer y hablar con algunas de estas bandas que están haciendo olas y algunas de mis influencias en los últimos tres años.
10 ¿Cómo es la escena en su área?
La escena en nuestra zona es probablemente como cualquier otra escena en nuestro país, corre caliente y frío. Hay un montón de influencia de la escena hardcore. He mencionado antes que Dave M es también un miembro de Skinless, que también son una gran influencia en las bandas de Death Metal en nuestra área.
