Band of Germany, is one of the classic bands of DEATH METAL European and of the world, its works were influence for more than one band, besides a CD like "DESCEND INTO THE ABSURD", that marked the influence in the metal scene, as well than a past and future interview of the group, FLESHCRAWL.

Here Ricardo Bedoya, from the magazine SCUMZINE MAGAZINE, How is everything in the band?
--- Hi there, all good at the moment. Very very busy finalizing the songs and recordings of the new album.
What is the expectation of ELPEE CAFÈ LIVE MUSIC CLUB?
--- We did not have some expectation. We knew it is a well known venue in Belgium and the billing for that night was great. So we were looking forward to having a great time ! And this is exactly what we had over there back in April.
In the year 1992, one of the most emblematic works of the world scene took place in the DEATH METAL, tell us about those days "DESCEND INTO THE ABSURD", how do you see it today?
--- Well, it was our debut album. A while before we went to Stockholm to record it, we signed the record deal with Black Mark Production. We have been excited as hell to say the least ! The band has been together since 1987, under different names, but after the final renaming to Fleshcrawl in 1991, things got rolling.
The song material for "Descend ..." was more or less written months before and we were prepared pretty well to enter the studio.
Many many rehearsals were done, so everybody really took the entire material in.
We had great 3 weeks back then in Stockholm in June 1992, everything went smooth and even all the partying couldn't stop the album from being completed haha.
The guys from Montezuma Studio and Black Mark took us around in Stockholm, nightlife, we met cool people, beer was expensive but tasty, so life was gooood !
Nowadays "Descend..." seems to be considered a classic album in the scene. At least there's people saying so. And obviously there's a demand from people to get this record re-released. So we are trying to get this accomplished in the near future. We re-printed "Descend..." merch some months ago which was selling really good. I also want to get 1 or 2 tracks of "Descend..." into our live set mid- to longterm.
Looking back on the songs itself, indeed I think these are carrying a special vibe and atmosphere which comes from the constant mix of doomy, slow, mid and faster parts. Seems this mix was fascinating a lot of people !
Tell us about "STRUCTURES OF DEATH"
--- Our last full length record from 2007, last and 4th one for Metal Blade. Also it was the first album we did not record in Sweden. Instead we went to a studio near our home town. This mainly was because of time constraints, could not spend 3 weeks to record abroad. Before Structures ... we always booked a recording studio in Sweden, but actually doing this at home definitely has a few advantages not to be underestimated. Biggest one for sure is that we are saving on holidays since we are all doing some day jobs. So this time can then be planned for gigs and other activities for example.
Currently, is any record label interested in the band? And do you have plans to record new material?
--- Yes and we already signed a deal with a label to release our upcoming "comeback" album.
Details to be revealed soon. Songwriting for the new album is completed and we are almost done with the recordings.
After that mix and mastering to be done.
How do you make the decision and process of making the cover art of the albums?
--- This basically goes with a tentative and then final album title. The title should and does give an artist enough inspiration to be able to create an artwork which fits the album title. The artist then does a sketch which we review and do suggestions or request changes. Once this was approved, the artist proceeds and completes the artwork.
How the EU and German scene is compared when FLESHCRAWL began in 1991 with the present
--- Back in the days there definitely were less bands than nowadays and no internet. Sending stuff around was done via normal post services. This took a considerable amount of time, especially to foreign countries and/or overseas.
Doing promo was by far not that easy as today via Facebook and alike. Trading and spreading flyers was the name of the game if one wanted to get an underground band more known to people. And also recording stuff was not that easy and possibly taken for granted as today. It was a lot more special thing compared to nowadays where basically everybody can produce his stuff
in the manner of home recording etc
Tell us about the Split FLESHCRAWL / SUFFOCATION "FESTERING THHOUGHTS FROM A GRAVE", how did the idea come about?
--- Rai from Raw Skull Recordz / Netherlands actually approached us and asked if we were into the idea of doing that. We found it to be a cool idea, so we started to collect the old tapes and material, so it could be digitized and re-mastered.
It took us a while until all material was complete especially all the old fotos. Really impressive what can be found when searching archives ...
How were things in distribution with METAL BLADE? Do you continue with them?
--- We had a great time while on Metal Blade, no issues with the availability of albums thru distributions. Only thing I dislike - looking back now - is that too less was done on the US market, my opinion, for the last albums they released.
And vinyl also was not done, but that decision came from a time when vinyl by far did not have the significance anymore compared to today.

How things were with the distribution of the press with the previous albums "IMPURITY", “BLOODSOUL "and" BLOODRED MASSACRE ?, as you define "BLACK MARK PRODUCTION".
--- Black Mark did a good job for the "Descend..." and also for the "Impurity" album, but then lacked to push the following two ones. It was the mid 90s and the death metal wave was decreasing worldwide and amongst others pushed aside by Grunge.
Many bands called it a day during that time, this was however never up for debate with Fleshcrawl. We kept on going, doing our thing. However, after 4 albums on Black Mark we felt that it was about time for a change and we parted ways with them.
It's a very active year, many concerts, metal fest, more than 10 concert dates, what are the expectations?
--- By some time in 2017 we decided to bring the band back in the scene with a new album. We put together kind of a "masterplan" what is required to achieve this goal. Actually there has been many many points on the agenda and one for sure is an increased amount of live shows and festivals. Let's see how the upcoming months will be and how the new album is perceived by the fans. We are ready to strike !
Let's talk a little about the METAL BLADE era, "AS BLOOD RAINS FROM THE SKY ... WE WALK THE PATH OF ENDLESS FIRE", "SOULSKINNER", "MADE OF FLESH", and how was the reaction of the fans and the press ? And distribution?
--- Signing to Metal Blade in 1999 was a big step forward for us. This gave us the push and support we needed at that time coming from the Black Mark era where we had the feeling nothing is moving forward anymore. MB supported us in any possible way, studio, arts, tour support etc. Fantastic ! All of our 4 albums on MB received good to great press and were also perceived well in the scene by the fans.
Really glad about that as you can imagine. Ok, of course there have been some negative reviews here and there, but hey, you cannot please everybody. Especially from 1998 to 2004 we played many shows, festivals, tours to support the first 3 records on MB.
Sadly we did not manage to tour for the Structures of Death album though.
Curious to see what we can achieve with the new album !
Tell us about the 2016 shows at ASIA TOUR United Arab Emirates, Nepal, Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam, did you meet expectations? And how was that experience?
--- This was a really fantastic experience ! Lots of prep work and planning beforehand, but it definitely was worth every minute of hard pre-work. We started the trip in Dubai, UAE with a club show. I was living and working in the country for around 2 years in the past, so I had somewhat good connections to parts of the local metal scene. After that we headed on to Nepal for Nepal deathfest which was killer ! Crazy crowd ! Actually I was told we've been the first german metal band playing in Nepal, cool ! We continued at RockPub, Bangkok, then Taiwan followed by 2 gigs in Philippines and then carried on in Singapore to play together with The Exploited and finally completed the tour in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Many flights and less sleep etc in about 12 days.
Somewhere along the road I fell ill a bit, and I struggled with that stuff all the way until the end of the tour.
Some kind of fever. I recall that I played the Bangkok and Taiwan gigs with 39 degrees each.
I think I might have gotten it in Nepal because it was kind of cold during our 3 days stay. There was an ongoing dispute between Nepal and India about something and the consequence was that India did cut the supply of combustibles with the effect that Nepal did have to cut power and heating for like 7 hour periods every day.
After Taiwan, I was longing to get back to warmer regions and by reaching the Philippines and onwards things got better and better eventually. Was actually glad I could complete the tour.
When are you scheduled to tour in Latin America?
--- At the moment nothing is scheduled yet, but we definitely want to make it over in the future. We are in touch with serious bookers. Let's see what can be done !
What do you know about Colombia? And about the metal scene in Colombia?
--- To be honest, don't know much, neither about the country nor the metal scene in Colombia.
All I heard is that fans are enthusiastic and crazy. Think we have to verify this by ourselves haha !
Future plans and final comment?
--- New album by end of 2019. This is the cornerstone for everything else to come.

--- Hola, todo bien por el momento. Muy muy ocupado finalizando las canciones y grabaciones del nuevo álbum.
¿Cuál es la expectativa de ELPEE CAFÈ LIVE MUSIC CLUB?
--- No teníamos alguna expectativa. Sabíamos que es un lugar muy conocido en Bélgica y la facturación de esa noche fue excelente. ¡Así que estábamos deseando tener un gran tiempo! Y esto es exactamente lo que teníamos allá en abril.
En el año 1992, una de las obras más emblemáticas de la escena mundial tuvo lugar en el DEATH METAL. Cuéntanos sobre esos días "DESCEND INTO THE ABSURD", ¿cómo lo ves hoy?
--- Bueno, fue nuestro primer álbum. Poco antes de ir a Estocolmo para grabarlo, firmamos el contrato de grabación con Black Mark Production. ¡Hemos estado muy emocionados como mínimo! La banda ha estado junta desde 1987, con diferentes nombres, pero después del cambio de nombre final a Fleshcrawl en 1991, las cosas se pusieron en marcha.
El material de la canción "DESCEND INTO THE ABSURD"estaba más o menos escrito meses antes y estábamos preparados bastante bien para entrar al estudio.
Se realizaron muchos ensayos, por lo que todos tomaron todo el material.
Tuvimos 3 semanas fantásticas en Estocolmo en junio de 1992, todo salió bien e incluso todas las fiestas no pudieron evitar que el álbum se completara, jaja.
Los chicos de Montezuma Studio y Black Mark nos llevaron a Estocolmo, a la vida nocturna, conocimos a personas geniales, la cerveza era cara pero sabrosa, ¡así que la vida era excelente!
Hoy en día, "DESCEND INTO THE ABSURD"parece ser considerado un álbum clásico en la escena. Al menos hay gente que lo dice. Y, obviamente, hay una demanda de la gente para que este disco sea relanzado. Así que estamos tratando de lograr esto en un futuro cercano. Reimprimimos "DESCEND INTO THE ABSURD"desde hace unos meses, que se vendía realmente bien. También quiero incluir 1 o 2 pistas de "DESCEND INTO THE ABSURD"nuestro set en vivo de mediano a largo plazo.
Mirando hacia atrás en las canciones en sí, de hecho creo que estas llevan una vibra y una atmósfera especial que proviene de la mezcla constante de doomy, partes lentas, medias y más rápidas. ¡Parece que esta mezcla fue fascinante para mucha gente!
Cuéntanos sobre ""STRUCTURES OF DEATH""
--- Nuestro último registro de larga duración de 2007, último y cuarto para Metal Blade. También fue el primer álbum que no grabamos en Suecia. En su lugar, fuimos a un estudio cerca de nuestra ciudad natal. Esto se debió principalmente a limitaciones de tiempo, no se pudo pasar 3 semanas para grabar en el extranjero. Antes de Structures ... siempre reservamos un estudio de grabación en Suecia, pero hacer esto en casa definitivamente tiene algunas ventajas que no se deben subestimar. El mayor seguro es que estamos ahorrando en días festivos, ya que todos estamos haciendo algunos trabajos diarios. Así que esta vez se puede planificar para conciertos y otras actividades, por ejemplo.

Actualmente, ¿hay algún sello discográfico interesado en la banda? ¿Y tienes planes para grabar nuevo material?
--- Sí, y ya firmamos un acuerdo con una etiqueta para lanzar nuestro próximo álbum "comeback".
Los detalles serán revelados pronto. La composición de canciones para el nuevo álbum está terminada y casi hemos terminado con las grabaciones.
Después de esa mezcla y masterización hay que hacer.
¿Cómo tomas la decisión y el proceso de hacer la portada de los álbumes?
--- Esto básicamente va con un título de álbum provisional y luego final. El título debe y le da a un artista la inspiración suficiente para poder crear una obra de arte que se ajuste al título del álbum. El artista luego hace un boceto que revisamos y hacemos sugerencias o solicitamos cambios. Una vez que esto fue aprobado, el artista procede y completa la obra de arte.
Cómo se compara la escena de la UE y la alemana cuando FLESHCRAWL comenzó en 1991 con el presente
--- En los días, definitivamente había menos bandas que hoy en día y no había internet. Enviar cosas alrededor se hizo a través de servicios normales de correos. Esto tomó una cantidad de tiempo considerable, especialmente en países extranjeros y / o en el extranjero.
Hacer promociones no era tan fácil como hoy a través de Facebook y por igual. Intercambiar y difundir folletos era el nombre del juego si uno quería que una banda clandestina fuera más conocida por la gente. Y también la grabación de cosas no fue tan fácil y posiblemente se dio por sentado como hoy. Era mucho más especial que hoy en día, donde básicamente todo el mundo puede producir sus cosas.

Háblenos de la división FLESHCRAWL / SUFFOCATION "FESTERING THHOUGHTS OF GRAVE", ¿cómo surgió la idea?
--- Rai de Raw Skull Recordz / Países Bajos en realidad se acercó a nosotros y nos preguntó si estábamos en la idea de hacerlo. Descubrimos que era una buena idea, por lo que comenzamos a recopilar las cintas y el material antiguos, para que pudieran digitalizarse y volver a masterizarse.
Nos tomó un tiempo hasta que todo el material estaba completo, especialmente todas las fotos antiguas. Realmente impresionante lo que se puede encontrar al buscar archivos...
¿Cómo fueron las cosas en la distribución con la lámina de metal? ¿Continúas con ellos?
--- Nos lo pasamos genial mientras estábamos en Metal Blade, no tuvimos problemas con la disponibilidad de álbumes a través de distribuciones. Lo único que me disgusta, mirando hacia atrás ahora, es que también se hizo menos en el mercado estadounidense, en mi opinión, para los últimos álbumes que lanzaron.
Y el vinilo tampoco se hizo, pero esa decisión vino de un momento en que el vinilo, por mucho, ya no tenía el significado en comparación con el de hoy.

--- Black Mark hizo un buen trabajo para "DESCEND INTO THE ABSURD" y también para el álbum "IMPURITY", pero luego careció de los siguientes dos. Fue a mediados de los 90 y la ola de death metal estaba disminuyendo en todo el mundo y, entre otros, dejada de lado por Grunge.
Muchas bandas lo llamaron un día durante ese tiempo, sin embargo, esto nunca fue tema de debate con FLESHCRAWL. Seguimos adelante, haciendo lo nuestro. Sin embargo, después de 4 álbumes en Black Mark, sentimos que era hora de un cambio y nos separamos de ellos.

Hablemos un poco sobre la era de la lámina de metal, "AS BLOOD RAINS FROM THE SKY... WE WALK THE PATH OF ENDLESS FIRE", "SOULSKINNER", "MADE OF FLESH", "HECHO DE CARNE", y cómo fue la reacción de los fanáticos y la prensa. ? ¿Y la distribución?
--- Firmar con Metal Blade en 1999 fue un gran paso para nosotros. Esto nos dio el empuje y el apoyo que necesitábamos en ese momento en la era de la Marca Negra, donde tuvimos la sensación de que ya nada está avanzando. MB nos apoyó de cualquier manera posible, estudio, artes, soporte de giras, etc. ¡Fantástico! Todos nuestros 4 álbumes en MB recibieron una buena prensa y también fueron percibidos bien en la escena por los fanáticos.
Realmente me alegro de eso como puedes imaginar. Ok, por supuesto que ha habido algunas críticas negativas aquí y allá, pero oye, no puedes complacer a todos. Especialmente desde 1998 hasta 2004, presentamos muchos espectáculos, festivales, giras para apoyar los primeros 3 registros en MB.
Lamentablemente no logramos hacer una gira para el álbum “STRUCTURES OF DEATH”.
¡Curioso por ver lo que podemos lograr con el nuevo álbum!
Cuéntenos sobre los shows de 2016 en ASIA TOUR Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Nepal, Tailandia, Taiwán, Filipinas, Singapur y Vietnam, ¿cumplió con las expectativas? ¿Y cómo fue esa experiencia?
--- ¡Esta fue una experiencia realmente fantástica! Mucho trabajo de preparación y planificación de antemano, pero definitivamente valió la pena cada minuto de duro trabajo previo. Comenzamos el viaje en Dubai, Emiratos Árabes Unidos con un espectáculo de club. Viví y trabajé en el país durante aproximadamente 2 años en el pasado, por lo que tuve conexiones bastante buenas con partes de la escena metalera local. Después de eso nos dirigimos a Nepal para la fiesta de la muerte de Nepal, que fue asesino! Multitud loca! De hecho, me dijeron que hemos sido la primera banda alemana de metal tocando en Nepal, ¡genial! Continuamos en RockPub, Bangkok, luego Taiwán, seguimos con 2 conciertos en Filipinas y luego continuamos en Singapur para tocar junto con The Exploited y finalmente completamos la gira en Ciudad Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

Creo que podría haberlo conseguido en Nepal porque hacía un poco de frío durante nuestra estancia de 3 días. Hubo una disputa en curso entre Nepal e India sobre algo y la consecuencia fue que India redujo el suministro de combustibles con el efecto. Que Nepal tuvo que cortar la energía y la calefacción por períodos de aproximadamente 7 horas cada día. Después de Taiwán, estaba deseando volver a las regiones más cálidas y, al llegar a Filipinas, las cosas mejoraron eventualmente. En realidad me alegro de haber podido completar el recorrido.
¿Cuándo tiene previsto realizar una gira en América Latina?
--- Por el momento no hay nada programado todavía, pero definitivamente queremos hacerlo en el futuro. Estamos en contacto con personas serias. ¡A ver qué se puede hacer!
¿Qué sabes de Colombia? ¿Y sobre la escena del metal en Colombia?
--- Para ser honesto, no sé mucho, ni del país ni de la escena del metal en Colombia.
Todo lo que escuché es que los fanáticos son entusiastas y locos. Creo que tenemos que verificar esto por nosotros mismos jaja!
¿Planes de futuro y comentario final?
--- Nuevo álbum para finales de 2019. Esta es la piedra angular de todo lo que vendrá.
